Kosulnikova Yulia
Born in St. Petersburg in 1988, Yulia Kosulnikova completed her studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Industry in 2011. Her large-scale paintings pair bold colour blocking with painterly and graphic elements in careful balance. Her work draws influence from orthodoxy, Gothicism and the Early Renaissance. Anthropomorphised animals and the use of masked characters suggest both ethnographic reconstructions and illustrations of ancient legends, though neither is her goal. Rather Kosulnikova’s images are best read as starting from a myth matrix of her own concoction, a sort of known and recognizable palimpsest that she freely overwrites. Internal conflict and metaphysical suffering, the on-going battle between mind and body, and human powerlessness before obsessions are frequent themes of her work.

Kosulnikova’s paintings have been acquired by acclaimed art collector Pierre-Christian Borchet and can be found in the Alberto Sandretti Collection in Italy.
