Surikov Alexander

Wikipedia defines Alexander Surikov as a "Russian poet, artist, and a bright neofuturist of the mid-90s". The 90s are long gone, and Alexander Surikov (born in 1971) has become one of the most prominent relatively young Siberian artists. Born in Irkutsk, he lives and works in Krasnoyarsk, where he graduated from the Art Institute (1998) and studied at the Creative Workshops of the Academy of Fine Arts. Despite his academic background, he uses techniques of naive art, art brut and traditions of the Culture of Popular Laughter. But as a rule, Surikov's works are seldom percept as self-sufficient visual objects of naive art, they rather feature pictorial allusions that invite us to play intellectual games of our cultural memory.

With such a name (this is not a pseudonym) and Krasnoyarsk as hometown, Alexander Surikov was fated to be associated with his glorious namesake. So in his series "Surikov 7" he made a number of modernistic remakes of the most famous works by Vasily Surikov.

Surikov's carnival dadaism has nothing to do with depressive absurdism. The vital energy and bright colors of his works show almost curative qualities.

The artist's solo and group exhibitions were held at numerous galleries and museums of Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, New York and other cities.

Date of Birth: May 4th 1971.
